Action Plan:
1. Don't be part of the problem! Read the labels before you purchase any Chondroitin or Fish Oil /Omega 3 supplements. Quality supplements will normally list the source of the ingredients. If it lists shark as a source or if it doesn't specify the source, then don't buy it!
2. Contact the manufacturer of the shark cartilage or shark liver oil product. Provide them with the facts on the environmental issues. Ask them to drop the product from their product line or use an alternative to the shark ingredients, such as cartilage from cows or fish oil from sardines.
And / Or
Contact the retailer (store or Internet / mail order company) that is marketing the product. Provide them with the facts and ask them to stop marketing the shark product(s). Show them the back up information to support your argument that these products are not effective and that they are damaging to the environment.
3. In the case of any companies that have made claims that these products are effective treatments for cancer or any other diseases, let them know that they are doing a disservice to their customers, damaging the environment, and putting their reputation at risk by marketing this product.
4. If the companies are not responsive, inform them that you are working on a campaign to educate consumers about these issues. Let them know that by not responding after you've made them aware of these issues, they have demonstrated their disregard for the environment. Let them know that consumers today care about the environment and there are many competitive products that are environmentally friendly. Let them know that major health supplement manufacturers / retailers, such as Holista Health, Whole Foods Market and more agreed to remove shark based supplements from their products when they were made aware of the issues.
5. Start a letter writing campaign to the company and make sure everyone who writes lets them know that they will not buy ANY of this company's products until they agree to stop making / selling Shark Based supplements.
6. Spread the word and keep up the pressure! Use social marketing, Internet forums, blogs, Twitter, etc. Shark Safe Network will support your efforts and get cooperating organizations involved as much as possible.
